One Heart at a Time
Nehlsen/Trosen
At 6:00 in the morning I see them on their knees.
I’m so sad’ cause I believe that God won’t hear their pleas.
With prayer beads and flowing robes
they turn to face the sun.
They drop the beads upon their mats,
the day has just begun.
At 1:00 the muezzin calls again,
“All gather ‘round”, and young and old alike all touch their faces to the ground,
and so it goes throughout the day.
I just can’t pass them by ‘cause You’re the Truth, the Life, the Way
so I turn to You and cry,
Chorus: Give me just one heart at a time;
help me to find a way
that I can touch just one heart at a time.
Give me the words to start,
so I can touch one more heart.
Working their way to heaven, giving to the poor,
raveling to Mecca – could Allah ask for more?
Building up their pillars, tasting straight and tall.
Don’t they know that some day soon their righteousness may fall?
How then can I reach them?
What more can I do?
I must speak of freedom.
I must live Your Truth, joyfully consistent today and every day;
never stop believing in these words I pray.
